Under Foot
Woman in the Middle | June 8, 2014Four years after we bought this house, we are finally getting around to doing a few of those things we told ourselves would get done “right away.” Before we moved in we had paint and carpet done. But at some point we had to stop “bleeding money” as Hubby said and new floors in the kitchen and bathrooms were put on the back burner. However, we never intended to put them on the “four years from now” burner.
Part of the issue was what exactly would we be putting on the floor? Tile is the popular, up to date thing right now but I am not all that thrilled with tile. I talk to everyone who has it and at most I get a luke warm endorsement for tile. The grout seems to attract dirt like no tomorrow, and sometimes the rough edges of the tile do too. But vinyl is so, well, yesterday…….
So I went to a flooring place and asked the ladies behind the counter what to do. They agreed that all my concerns about tile were true and then one said to another, “Show her the luxury vinyl.” Luxury vinyl? What the heck? But I couldn’t believe what I saw. The stuff looks EXACTLY like tile! But it isn’t! The perfect marriage of easy to clean (for me) and the up to date look (for hubby). They showed me some on the floor and I waited until they weren’t looking to reach down and feel the stuff because, I admit, I didn’t believe it was vinyl.
I got the new floor installed last week. I like the way it looks. The product we used comes in 3′x3′ panels and the only complaint I have is that you can see the seams. The installer didn’t do a fantastic job and some of the seams were more visible than others. So he used a filler to hide all of the seams. That made the floor look great but the owner of the company wasn’t real happy about the filler being used. Sigh. He was concerned about how it was going to wear over time. I have had vinyl floors before where a filler was used to hide the seam (and where it was used to hide a hole in a brand new floor when a small child dropped something) and I never had a problem with it, so I am optimistic. Here is what my new, neutral, easy to clean floor looks like today:
Here is the luxury vinyl in a closer view.
Looking at the photo of the old floor reminded me how yucky it was and how much happier I am with the new floor.
