Kansas City, Missouri
Woman in the Middle | May 13, 2016After our ride on the train, we had two full days in Kansas City, Missouri, to see the sights before returning home. Our train arrived at Union Station, and that was our first tourist stop. Built in 1914, it was beautiful! It has been repurposed to be home to a children’s science center, the chamber of commerce, and other public entities. The citizens of three counties in two states voted to tax themselves to save this beautiful building. I was apparently too busy admiring it all, and I ended up taking just one photo, which doesn’t do the space any justice. In the bottom right is a restaurant, which is in the area that was originally the ticket booths. Imagine windows all around that curved wall, selling tickets to the thousands of people a week who came through the station.
Since we arrived in KC at 7 am, we had plenty of time to kill before our room at the Westin was ready, so we dumped our suitcases off with the hotel and took a bus tour of the city. We stayed on the bus the whole time, with one exception, the Liberty Memorial. It was built in honor of the men who served in World War I. Later it was declared the National WWI Memorial. It is a beautiful art déco monument. Again, my photo does not do it justice.
Liberty Memorial includes a World War I museum that is apparently quite good, from what I have read. However, since we were celebrating our anniversary that day, Hubby and I both agreed that “30th wedding anniversary” did not seem to go with “war museum,” so we saved that for a future trip.
The museum we did visit that first day was the Money Museum at the Federal Reserve bank, located right next to the Liberty Memorial. It was the right price – free – and we decided to take a look. The museum was more about the federal reserve and less about money than I expected. However, it did have some interesting things to see. One was an exhibit on loan from the Truman library, which included coins minted from every presidential term since George Washington.
I got to put my face on a $100,000 bill.
And I took Hubby’s photo with a whole lot of money. In case you can’t read that, Hubby is standing with $40 million dollars!
After the Money Museum, we claimed our hotel room, had lunch, and collapsed for a couple of hours. Then we celebrated our anniversary by going out to dinner, for barbecue, of course! Within walking distance of our hotel was this place:
It was delicious! Hubby and I shared a plate, since we didn’t want leftovers. We had a giant beef rib which was amazing, delicious baby back ribs, some burnt ends, beans and corn casserole. Since we were celebrating, and we were on vacation, we got the carrot cake to go. Again, I was so bad on this vacation about taking photos. But the cake was a large individual cake, very dense, with just the right amount of cream cheese frosting. Typing all this just makes me want to go back!
That ends Day 1 in KC. In another post I will tell you all about Day 2.
