A Shower of Good Wishes
Woman in the Middle | May 28, 2014This past Saturday a bridal shower was held at my home for the daughter of a good friend of mine. We have been friends since college so I was happy to host the bridal shower for her daughter. I was in charge of cleaning the house (!) and providing the food, drink, and cake. The bridesmaids dealt with the invitations and provided the games, prizes, and favors as well as helped during the party.
As the guest list grew closer and closer to 30 people, and keeping in mind what I thought the bride would like, I ended up deciding to have a cross between a tea and a small bites menu. Here is a photo of the food lined up on the bar between my kitchen and family room.
Above are the mini quiches, chicken salad sandwiches, watermelon and strawberries.
Then there were sweet and savory scones with cream and lemon curd to go on them, and the red and green you see closest to the camera were small appetizers on skewers that were the hit of the party. I will give you the recipe later in the week. The one thing I don’t seem to have a photo of are the teriyaki chicken meatballs that came from Costco.
I purchased two round cakes from Albertsons. I think they look better than a giant slab of cake. It also allows you to get two flavors (although, given the number of guests, I stuck with one flavor for both cakes). I asked Albertsons to decorate the cakes similar to the napkins I purchased for the shower. We used to have an Albertsons nearby, but that store closed and now I have to hike half way across town to get to one. However, I find their cakes to be delicious and reasonably priced. Each of these cakes cost me just $13.99! If you buy a cake at Albertsons, I highly recommend you get the whipped icing. The whipped icing is light and delicious and everyone always raves about it. I am sure the butter cream is just fine, but the whipped icing is just different and unexpected.
The weather turned out to be cool enough for the shower to be held on the patio, thank goodness! I just have more room out there. It was a little overcast but that just meant that it wasn’t too warm.
Below is a photo of the lovely bride during one of the games.
Colored pencils and blank paper were handed out to all of the guests. We were supposed to draw a picture of the groom, either by himself or doing some activity. The bride then selected her top picks and showed them to the group. Out of those she selected her favorite one and that person won the prize. It was a really fun game.
It turned out to be a beautiful day. The bride got lots of nice gifts, we played fun games and ate pretty good food (if I do say so myself) and now my house is much cleaner than before. A win-win for everyone!
