Even with all those brains….
Woman in the Middle | July 10, 2012Eldest Daughter is taking a couple of classes this summer at her university. Since the classes are just five short weeks we decided the best (but not the cheapest!) course of action would be to buy the books from the university bookstore. I talked her into getting going somewhat early this morning due to the heat and the fact that good old University of California at Riverside has no short-term parking anywhere near the book store. Now, tell me if I am wrong, but I would think a university book store would want those thousands of alumnae they have to stop by and pick up the occasional t-shirt or mug or license plate frame. I would also think that the same university bookstore would like the parents of their students to stop by to pick up similar items to give to students. But that must not be the case given the parking situation. How is it that an institution with so many smart people can be so dumb about their parking?
So, Eldest Daughter and I parked somewhere in the next county, in a smidge of shade. That last bit was a mistake which I will get to later. Hugging every building and tree for as much shade as possible, it was still a forced march to the book store. I was clutching the remains of a Frappuccino which helped. I finished the cold drink just as I got to the bookstore, unfortunately. We bought the books, looked at a few UCR embellished products (I happen to be an alumnae of that institution) and then headed back to the back of beyond. Unfortunately, at that point I didn’t have any cold drink to help with the trek.
Again, Eldest and I tried to stay in the shade as much as possible but there were areas with no shade and it was hot, even in the shade. Even though it was still before 11 am it was over 90 degrees. Then we got to the parking lot, the bottom of the parking lot. The partly shaded parking space we parked in was in the upper portion of the lot, as in at a higher elevation than where we entered the parking lot. At that point I really wished we had parked in the sun. Sigh.
I am back home now, in my air-conditioned house. It is better here, under the ceiling fans, even if I do have the AC set on 79. I am going to stay here at least until the sun goes down, or maybe until November.
