Day Tripping: Crestline, California
Woman in the Middle | September 2, 2014We live quite close to the San Bernardino mountains. In the winter, after a storm blows through, the air is bright and clear and we can see the mountains covered with snow, which is about as close to the white stuff as I like to get. I prefer to visit the mountains in the summer, when we can get a break from the heat by spending a few hours at a higher elevation.
Recently we were on our way to Lake Arrowhead when, at the last second, we decided to take a detour to a little town called Crestline. Crestline is at an elevation of 4600 feet so it was cooler than at our house, perfect walking around weather. Lake Gregory is located in Crestline, where people can enjoy boating or just having fun in the water. We just drove past the lake to admire it, as swimming was not on our agenda that day.
While Crestline gets tourists, primarily because of Lake Gregory, it isn’t a very touristy place, if you know what I mean. Almost every store and shop in town is a mom and pop place, with the exception of McDonald’s. It is a refreshing change of pace from the kind of place that has shop after shop full of postcards and knick knacks. Crestline has much more of the small town vibe, probably because, well, it is a small town. There were a number of antique stores, as well as the regular shops that the locals shop in. Hubby, the girls and I enjoyed just walking and poking around in the shops in the main commercial area on Lake Street. We grabbed some ice cream at one of the stores and enjoyed that while we took in the sites.
Here are the girls, walking up the street ahead of us. Just being surrounded by all the pine trees made me feel cooler!
Eldest Daughter saw a pizza place off the main drag and we decided to go there for dinner. It is called RoadHouse Pizza and the pizza we had was delicious. The main room was being used by the local kids football team and we got the hear the coach going through various plays on his white board while the boys and girls on the team listened intently. Behind the counter, the young woman helping us said something to the older lady next to her, calling her “Grandma.” Like I said, Crestline is full of family businesses. RoadHouse Pizza is located just off Lake Street at 565 Forest Shade Road.
All in all it was a nice get away and escape from the heat for a few hours.
The only thing I have to warn you about is that the main commercial street in Crestline, Lake Street, is pretty busy. So you need to be very careful when crossing the street to get to shops on the other side. In some places the site distance is a little short and you don’t want to get run over!
