It finally comes naturally
Woman in the Middle | August 31, 2012Several years ago our church was forced to close due to lack of money. We knew this was coming and had found a new church that was a few miles away. Other than the big switch from a dying church to one that was viable, the biggest different we had to deal with was in the Lord’s Prayer. Our old church used “trespasses” as in ”forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Our new church used “debts”, as is “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”
It was so hard for so long to try to remember to remember to say “debts” instead of “trespasses.” Every time we messed up it was a tiny little reminder that we were in a new worship place and it was weird and a little hard.
At church this past Sunday, when we said the Lord’s Prayer, “debts” just tripped off my tongue. I was back to being able to say the correct Lord’s Prayer automatically, in my sleep even, although, I assure you, I was not asleep! When it was over and I realized I had said the Lord’s prayer with no hesitation, I knew that I had finally settled in, completely, to my new church home. I am sure I have been settled for a while, but last Sunday was the day I realized it. It felt good.
