Random Musings – May 5, 2017
Woman in the Middle | May 5, 2017Youngest saw a purse online that she fell in love with. It was red, with a big rose on the front, made out of the same leather as the purse. It was pricey, but she decided to splurge. When it arrived, she was unhappy to find her expensive (to her) purse had been mailed in a very thin plastic mailing envelope. No protection there, except from rain, maybe. The good news is when she opened the bag, the purse was fine. The bad news is it wasn’t bright red, it was a dull tan color. We looked online and discovered that the purse was NEVER made in red, it was always “rose gold.” So how the site she ordered it from manged to post a photo of the purse showing it was red is beyond us. Anyway, she called the company and they sent her a prepaid label to use to return the purse. Along with the mailing label were mailing instructions, including the requirement that the purse be returned to them in a box…So the company can mail pricey purses in the equivalent of a strong Baggie, but to return them they need the protection of a box. What nerve!
We recently attended the memorial service of the father of a friend. For most of the last many years, the gentleman in question lived out of state, so I only met him once or twice. Hubby knew him better because he has been friends with the gentleman’s sons since childhood. So, for me, the service was a wonderful time learning about this man who lead a truly amazing life. He worked in our state Fish and Game department and, before becoming one of the foremost experts on big horn sheep, worked to preserve mountain lion populations. He was actually the first person in California to put a tracking collar on a mountain lion. Amazing!
Cloud the front yard cat may be feral, but he does seem to understand that we give him food and don’t threaten him. The only time he has hissed at me was a time I accidentally startled him, which is easy to do since he is almost deaf. Well, until recently, when he hissed at me even though I didn’t startle him. I came home from Costco and tried to get everything from the car to the front door in one trip. But when I got to the door, I had to set somethings down in order to get a hand on my keys and get the door unlocked. Among other things, I set down a roasted chicken on a chair we have by the door. When I got inside, I immediately set about fixing some food for Cloud. When I took it back out, he was coming towards me. Normally, not a problem. But he stood his ground and hissed at me. Hum…I just walked forward, he retreated with no more hissing, and immediately began eating the food I put before him. I turned back around, and saw the chicken sitting there. (Don’t worry, it had been there less than 5 minutes). Now I understood why Cloud hissed at me. He had been on his way to check out the chicken when I got in his way. Oh well, he didn’t get the chicken, but he did get canned food. I think he survived.
