Small Thing, Big Impact
Woman in the Middle | July 17, 2016The church we belong to holds its services in a building that is 103 years old, A major interior overhaul was done in the 1950s which changed the configuration of the pews from side aisles only to two side aisles and a center aisle. This required brand new pews. At that time, pews were installed that are all wood construction. As a nod to comfort, a separate upholstered foam pad was put on each pew seat.
Those cushions had been there a long time. Not since the 1950s, I don’t think, but long enough so each one looked like it had been flattened to within an inch of its life. Not something that impressed you with its comfort, either visually, or with your behind.
My church is currently undergoing some repair and updating. A big capital campaign occurred to pay for things like new flooring, renovating the kitchen, stabilizing the bell tower, etc. Apparently, that also included new cushions for the pews. The old cushions were taken out so a few hardy and devoted souls could get in there Saturday and really clean those wooden pews. Unfortunately, that meant today the church service was conducted while the congregation sat on wooden pews, without even the small comfort of the usual cushions..
Well, I am hear to tell you, after sitting though church today, those squished thin cushions added a measure of comfort that heretofore the congregation was unaware of. We are aware of it now! I think everyone in the sanctuary gave more than one wiggle, trying to get comfortable. I am looking forward to the new cushions being installed before next Sunday, and I have a feeling everyone else is, too!
