Things I have learned recently
Woman in the Middle | July 13, 2016You should never stop learning, they say. Here are a few things I have learned over the past several months.
1. If you keep mowing dead grass, eventually you will just have dirt. We have an area of our back yard that doesn’t get watered due to some issues with the sprinklers. Hubby was watering it with the hose but somehow that went by the wayside. We did get rain this winter and I think both of us thought that was helping the grass along. We were wrong. Meanwhile, the weekly mow and blow lawn guys are faithfully mowing the dead grass. A couple of weeks ago I saw them out there and the dirt was flying! I told them to stop mowing that area until further notice.
3. Hubby likes grass, period. I would like to re-landscape the area in question. Now that it is half bare dirt I thought it would be a good time. However, Hubby likes looking out the back windows and seeing grass in that area. Any discussion of taking out the grass is a nonstarter. But we get a lot of gophers in that area as well, making walking across the grass a dangerous exercise in trying to avoid turning your ankle. We have compromised. We will keep the grass but put in a path so no one hurts themselves.
4. Blackie likes sheets. When a recent guest left, the sheets were stripped from the inflatable bed and tossed in the corner of the computer room. Before we could get them into the washing machine, Blackie was laying on them. He looked so comfortable we hated to move them, but, at the same time, I didn’t like the idea of my regular sheets being turned into a cat bed. So I went off to the thrift store and for two dollars I got two queen sized flat sheets. We tossed those in the corner where the other sheets were and it is now a beloved cat bed. Nox sometimes has a rest there as well. (Lumos prefers to sleep somewhere off the floor.)
5. Weather is totally unpredictable anymore. Really, I have no idea what to expect. What I think of as the regular expected weather for a certain time of year never happens. Maybe my memory is just off. That wouldn’t be the first time!
hope you are having a great Wednesday! Tell me what you have learned recently!!!
Check out the water district’s demonstration garden near Mt Rubidoux. They have several grasses that are low water, and need little to no mowing.
That is a good idea! Don’t know if Hubby will go for it, but it is worth a try!
I learned there is a way to get to the Santa Monica Pier via MetroLink Train. You have to go to take the MetroLink Train to Union Station in LA, and you need to transfer to one of the bus lines.
We took the Metrolink to Union Station when we took Amtrak in May. It made it pretty convenient, not having to get someone to take us.
