The Wild Life
Woman in the Middle | June 18, 2016I had a little wildlife in my life yesterday.
Youngest Daughter works in a multistory office building located next to a vacant field. That field has been left undeveloped to provide habitat for an endangered bird, the burrowing owl. Yes, it is an owl that lives underground. Much, I am sure, to the owner of the land’s chagrin, there are actual burrowing owls living on the property. I got to see one yesterday! As we were getting into Youngest’s car she pointed out the bird sitting on a nearby post. It was the cutest little owl you would ever want to see! After hearing about burrowing owls for years, it was so fun to actually see one!
Youngest kindly whipped out her cell phone and took a photo of the burrowing owl for me. We couldn’t get too close and didn’t want to scare the little guy in any case, so this is the best we could do.
Later in the evening, the girls were in the pool and I was puttering around in the yard, watering things, when Eldest Daughter suddenly said, “Look! It’s a bat!” Sure enough, a little bat was flying in, and coming down right to the water level, making a little splash, and then flying up and away before coming back again. Eldest informed me it was a California brown bat. I have no idea and will have to take her word for it. But it was definitely a bat, which was so cool to see. I think bats are very interesting creatures and they eat so many bugs, especially mosquitoes. I would like the little guy to bring back a few of his friends, to make sure we don’t have a mosquito problem this summer.
