How Things Change
Woman in the Middle | June 2, 2016Eldest Daughter and I were at her college yesterday. It happens to be my alma mater as well. It was lunch time and we were both starving. The closest place to get some food was a food truck parked nearby. However, there weren’t any tables by the food truck. I was looking around and noticed a low wall we could sit on. After I suggested it, Eldest said, “We can go eat int he library. ” I looked at her like she was crazy and said “They don’t allow food in the library.” “Sure they do,” she said. “They have vending machines in there now, and coffee.”
People, I just about fainted. Back in the day we had to act like sneak thieves to get anything into the library to eat or drink. The reason we were told no food or drink was allowed was to protect the materials. Drinks could get spilled on the books, food crumbs could attract bugs and rats that would do further damage to the materials, etc…. I don’t know if they decided not much damage was occurring, or if so much food was being sneaked in they might as well sell food themselves and make a little money. Whatever the case, my how times change!
Potluck int he library! Bring a dish to share!
We used to be able to eat in my local library too, as long as we stayed in the designated areas. However that all changed recently. I guess too many spills happened.
My local library used to sell drinks and snacks, and patrons were allowed to eat and drink in the same room. However, that all changed recently. Now, the only thing patrons can bring in are clear water bottles. I guess too many spills and food messes occurred.
Our library used to let us eat in it but not anymore.
Not sure that’s a good idea although if students use it for long study sessions, an occasional energy bar is good. Drinks and sticky food, not so much.
