Just Thinking Back….On Early Nights
Woman in the Middle | May 18, 2016Hubby and I are usually in bed before 11 pm on weeknights. However, that is still a late night compared to my parents. For some reason I was thinking about that the other day.
By the time I was a teenager, Brother Dear, who was 10 years older than me, had moved out and it was just Mom and Dad and I. Mom and Dad both worked full-time, so they needed their sleep. The TV went off promptly at 10 p.m. and we all went to bed.
Thinking back on it, I realize now Mom like to read a little before she went to sleep. Dad was a man, and middle-aged men tend to have problems sleeping, so he probably went to bed at that time to make up for waking up early or in the middle of the night. I do know he had heartburn issues and that would sometimes keep him from sleeping. .
Meanwhile, I went to bed because, well, that was when the TV went off. Back then, Johnny Carson and the Tonight Show seemed like some far away exotic program that happened in the middle of the night! I felt the same way about Saturday Night Live. I think we were the only family in America that didn’t watch “Roots.” Hey, some of the episodes of that miniseries went to 11 p.m. on a weeknight! There was no way we were going to watch that! No VCRs or DVRs back then, at least not in our house.
Since it was just the thee of us, the house was dead quiet when we went to bed. I still to this day need silence to get to sleep, unless I am ridiculously tired. That was one of the reasons I didn’t go away to college. I knew I would never be able to get to sleep in a noisy dorm.
It is fun and funny to think back on those days. Thanks for letting me reminisce!
