We’re Back!
Woman in the Middle | May 7, 2016Hubby and I got back yesterday from our five day vacation. I will tell you all about it in later posts. But first I wanted to tell you what happened on the first and last days, because those are the real vacation stories.
We left last Monday. We needed to be at the local train station to catch a commuter train at 3:18 in the afternoon. It would take us to Union Station in Los Angeles where we would be catching the Amtrak at 6:10 pm. We got up, and looked forward to plenty of time to get things done before we had to leave. Then we noted that Honey was hobbling around on three legs. An hour later there was no improvement so I took her to the vet. They said to come back at 2 pm and they would show us the x-rays they were taking. Cutting it close….
I rushed home and hubby and I continued getting packed, taking showers, etc… We were at the vet’s at five minutes before two. We waited a few minutes and the vet showed us the x-rays. She suspected a partial tear in a knee ligament. She said we could do conservative treatment, which included complete rest, for two weeks and see how Honey was doing. If that didn’t clear it up surgery was the only answer. (Honey is almost 16, so, really, surgery wasn’t an option.)
Then she dropped the bombshell. We would have to keep her in a cage 24 hours a day and take her outside on a leash to keep her quiet. What? We explained that, at this point, we were laving on vacation in half an hour and couldn’t even imagine leaving the girls with trying to manage Honey, find a cage, and walk her outside. So we left Honey to board at the vet’s office and left, very concerned about our dog. Not a really great way to start a vacation!
I am happy to report that five days of rest at the Vet’s has done Honey a world of good. Instead of facing unpleasant options, we are trying to keep her quiet but she is walking on the injured leg once again with little sign of limping. Yay!
Then there was the last day of vacation. It all went smoothly until our layover in Phoenix. We ended up leaving there about 20 – 25 minutes late. No big deal, except the board kept saying “on time” so I didn’t call the girls to tell them we were running a little late. When we arrived at our local airport it was raining cats and dogs. What? May 6th in So Cal is usually not a rain day! When we landed there were several inches of rain on the runway and we could see little waves rolling through the water. They the pilot announced we would have to sit on the tarmac until the storm cleared as there was lightening and the workers on the ground couldn’t come out and attach us to the walkway as they would be exposed to the lightening. The fellow next to me pulled out his smartphone and looked up the weather. There was a weather cell parked over the area with the most intense area of rain parked over, you guessed it, the airport!
So we watched the rain, and then the hail, come down, and it was really coming down!
I am happy to report we only had to sit for about 15 minutes for the lightening to clear. It was still raining, however, and we got a bit damp throwing our suitcases in Youngest Daughter’s car and jumping in the back seat. Again, not big deal, really. But neither Hubby nor I have ever had to sit in an airplane due to lightening. Maybe this is more common in other parts of the country, but not so much around here, and certainly not in May!
All’s well that ends well, however, and we are certainly glad our two vacation problems ended well.
Too close for comfort both times. Whew! I’m glad it worked out for you two.
Glad the Honey situation turned out ok and everything else went ok if a little out of whack.
Well we are pleased to hear that Honey is doing much better, but having to board her at the vets would have been an unexpected expense which sucks. Tim and I have flown a few times now and thankfully never had a delayed flight or been stuck sitting on the tarmac for ages waiting for something. Knock on wood and yes I did knock on wood
