Animal Antics – Dogs and Ducks and the Pool
Woman in the Middle | April 12, 2016It is spring so we are back to chasing ducks out of the pool. They are pooping all over the coping around the pool, so obviously we aren’t doing it as much as we should.
The sliding glass door was open yesterday evening and I heard the tell tale splash down of ducks. I told Eldest Daughter it was her turn to do duck patrol. She got up, opened the screen door and, as usual, Honey blasted through the open door to the back yard. That is OK, we like to let her run around out there, but only if we are out there, too.
Back when we first moved here also most six years ago, Honey was a good duck chaser. But at almost 15, with diminished sight and hearing, she rarely notices them. However, today was the exception. She saw those ducks and went to town, barking and running…right into the pool! I heard the sound of the ducks taking off, then a splash, and then Eldest screamed. I knew immediately what had happened. I ran outside, wondering if Eldest or I were going to have to take the plunge. I am happy to report that Honey, after going under when she first hit the pool, bobbed back up and immediately dog paddled to the nearest side. Eldest hit the ground and pulled the dog out of the pool.
Lets just say somebody was a little shocked and bewildered by the whole thing.
After drying her off once, I used a second towel to dry her off some more. In order to get her legs and tummy I picked her up. Honey doesn’t like to be picked up.
But then she relaxed, and even leaned in and rested her face on mine at one point. Honey is not a snuggle dog, so I enjoyed the very rare opportunity.
I am happy to report Honey is none the worse for her swim yesterday. She is her same old chipper, elderly self.
