Feeling like a Farm Girl
Woman in the Middle | March 6, 2016As I live on a suburban homestead, the only thing I grow are oranges and lemons – one tree of each. But we know people who grow way more than that. A lot of people in my city live on large lots where they can grow lots of things, including animals, a big garden, you name it.
Today I was making a batch of muffins. The recipe called for orange juice, orange zest, honey, and eggs, among other things. I went outside and got an orange off my tree for the juice and zest. I pulled eggs out of my fridge that came from a friend of the girls whose family has chickens. The chickens are producing four dozen eggs a day, way too many for them to use. I pulled honey from the same friend off the shelf. They raise bees, too.
I was felling like a regular farm girl, using all these home-grown products for my muffins, even if the home where they were grown wasn’t mine.
Speaking of oranges, we are now up to over 450 pulled off our one tree. We think there are at least a few dozen still left. We might break 500 yet.
I wish I had an orange tree, I do so like oranges, never felt like a farm girl but sometimes I feel like a lazy girl
I wish I lived near someone who raised eggs and honey. What a treat that would be!
A couple of weeks ago, I picked only half of the oranges from one of my great aunt’s trees and ended up with three large coolers of oranges, so I can understand how your tree can be producing 500 oranges. I think it’s wonderful how God is providing for you.
How lucky you are to be living in such a garden of eden!
Well, I wouldn’t go quite that far…but it is a pretty nice place!
