Another Bumper Crop
Woman in the Middle | January 4, 2016The drought and our cut back in watering didn’t seem to have an adverse impact on our red navel orange tree. We have a bumper crop this year. I decided to keep a rough count of how many we pick off the tree. So far we have taken 40. All the photos you see here are after the 40 were picked.
One of our neighbors was out in her front yard when I was picking oranges and so I gave her some. She said the tree had more oranges than she had ever seen before. So much for thinking we were going to get a smaller crop. She also wanted to know what we do to it to make it so happy and prolific. Um, water it…and pick the oranges. There is a reason navel oranges trees are grown commercially. They REALLY want to make oranges!
The branches on the tree are high on the trunk and drape down. This creates an area near the trunk that is open and I can actually stand up right inside the tree. The following photo is of the inside of the tree, looking out. Bet you have never seen the inside of a navel orange tree before!
Because we have rain predicted for most of this week, courtesy of El Nino, I decided I better get some picked and distributed. I learned my lesson a while ago. Do not pick oranges from a wet tree unless you want to be wet yourself!
So lucky! I would kill to have that tree in my yard!
Your tree is not only prolific, the oranges are delicious – enjoy!
Oh I wish we had an orange tree, I love oranges they are my favourite fruit
Oh how I envy you…oranges in your own yard! Heavenly.
They look delicious! And no, I have not seen the inside of a navel tree before.
