A Reunion
Woman in the Middle | November 11, 2015Ten years ago the United Methodist church we attended closed. It was church where we were married. Our two girls were christened there. My Mom’s funeral was held in that church. But, unfortunately, the church struggled and it was eventually forced to close due lack of members and money. We moved on to another church, and we love it there. But we have missed seeing the folks from the old church.
I decided to do something about that and proposed to a few of the ladies I still see that we have a reunion. Well, that proposed reunion has been sort of planned but never happened for about two years now. Finally, about a month ago, we set a date, Sunday, November 1st. We put the word via Facebook and telephone, if we still had telephone numbers. I had absolutely no idea how many people would be coming so I decided to just throw the whole house and patio open and figured everyone would find a seat when they ate. It might be inside, might be outside, might be at a table or a bar or on a couch, but there would be enough seats.
Like any good get together of Methodists, it was a pot luck. Like any good potluck you have very little idea what food you will have, which always makes the party planner in me twitch. But there was plenty of food and a whole lot of fried chicken.
The funny thing was that in several instances the parents couldn’t come but the now grown children came. We had as many 20 somethings as we did old folks. It made me feel good that these kids had such fond memories of our church that they actually wanted to see each other and us old folks as well. One of the “kids” even brought his one year old, who we were all delighted to meet for the first time. Kids we remember as little aren’t so little any more! Altogether we had 24 people. Not a bad showing.
As you can see from what we are wearing , we had lovely weather. The last “summer” weekend, even though it was November 1st! We hope to do this again, and round up even more people.
Wonderful turnout! You were brave to host it when you don’t know how many are coming. I would twitch quite a bit!
Oh yes, I was twitching up a storm! But it turned out fine.
Your church reunion reminds me of the reunion of a street that I used to live on when I was 4 through 9. A bunch of my neighbors had gotten together and had had a reunion. I didn’t know about it until after it happened, but I was surprised that my former neighbors feel the same sentiment I do about when we had lived there. If they ever have another reunion, I hope I will find out about it in time so I can go too. I would love to see my former neighbors again!
