Fabric Memories VI
Woman in the Middle | October 22, 2015It has been awhile since I posted a Fabric Memory, but that doesn’t mean I am done. There were a lot of memories in that closet. Today I am going to reminisce about two outfits, because neither one of them has a particularly long story.
The first outfit was actually one of my Mom’s. After she got sick and I had gained a little weight from having two babies, it ended up in my closet.
This outfit is quintessentiallymy mom. It is made from polyester fabric, and my mom rocked the polyester! Do you remember when polyester double-knit first came out in all its glory? My mom took a special class in sewing with the new stretchy fabric and made herself a number of outfits out of colorful double-knit.
Mom didn’t sew this dress and jacket, of course. By the time she bought this she had pretty much given up sewing. But I always liked the turquoise color. It went to nicely with her red hair. The cream colored top of the dress went nicely with her freckles and the ruffle was just her.
The other outfit was one my mother bought me (I am seeing a theme here. Mom seems to have bought a lot of the clothes I kept…) I know, I know, this one screams early 80s. I loved the black dress with the gold sparkly jacket. I just love shiny things! It looks like it has the then popular shoulder pads, but it doesn’t. The sleeves puff out just because of the type of material the jacket is made out of and the way the sleeves are designed.
I wore this outfit for New Year’s Eve, which probably doesn’t shock you. Where else would wear it??? I looked up 1980s fashion a while back and saw some photos of Madonna wearing similar jackets. Because, who wouldn’t want to rock a shiny gold jacket like this?
I do love your fabric memories. Clothes seem to carry stories with them and how wonderful that you held onto some of yours.
