All the Scoop on the Poop
Woman in the Middle | August 6, 2015Poop seems to be my life. Pet poop, that is. We have a whole lot of pooping and scooping going on in our world, and I do 90% of it!
First the obvious – we have two new kittens. They live most of their life in the master bedroom right now. (We thought it best to wait until they are a little bigger before making full introductions to Honey and Blackie.Combined right now they only just top five pounds.) They eat the same thing every day, but sometimes their poop smells like nothing and sometimes it seems like a toxic waste dump has landed in the bedroom. Needless to say, in order to keep the bedroom smelling like a bedroom and not like a huge pile of kitten poo, I scoop the box they use on a regular basis. They have been great and never had an accident. No inappropriate pooping is going on. Just looking forward to the day when their litter box can go out to the garage. To be honest, other than the unfortunate smell that wafts through my bedroom on occasion, they are the least of my worries.
Next on the list of worries is Honey. To be honest, she is 15 years old and suffering from doggie dementia. One sign of that is inappropriate “going” in the house. For example, we put her out, let her back in, and 10 minutes later she is pooping in the house. We are trying to put her out on a regular enough basis to prevent this from happening, which works some days and other days not so much. This morning was a not so much. Sigh.
Honey used to be a private pooper. For the first five years we had her we saw the evidence of her pooping in the back yard but never actually saw her poop. I am not kidding. Never ever. And even after that, we rarely caught her in the act, so to speak. But now she has no shame. If we take her for a walk, I can guarantee that she will present us with a gift within three houses. Every single time. We still take her for walks, but now we carry those little poop bags. We have to.
Last but definitely not least on the poop-o-meter is Blackie. Our problem with him is that he doesn’t poop enough. Right now we are in a low pooping cycle. This is not a good thing. I think the latest batch of medicine designed to help him poop is not good. Pooping is happening so rarely we are having to take action. This is not something either Blackie or I enjoy, but it prevents an expensive and stressful visit to the vet.
To keep on top of Blackie’s pooping issues I have to keep track of when he goes on the calendar. Do I love doing this? No. Is it needed? Yes.This is the cat that came into our lives at a very difficult time. This is the cat that my daughters have loved for the vast majority of their lives. So, I track poop and give enemas. Oh boy!
Thank you for allowing me to get the whole pooping scoop off my chest. Figuratively of course. Not literally. That would just be too gross.
