The Kitten Who Lived
Woman in the Middle | July 3, 2015Have you read the Harry Potter Books? Everyone in our house loves them. In the books, Harry Potter is refered to as “The Boy Who Lived.” As we drove away from the Vet’s office yesterday, our little fuzzy kitten safely in his carrier in the back seat, I told Eldest Daughter that the kitten was the Boy Who Lived as well.
We took him in yesterday morning and they tested his blood. His blood work was better and his weight had gone up so they wanted to go ahead and do the surgery. I asked if waiting another week or two would be better, but Dr. B explained that there were plusses and minuses to doing it now or waiting and she recommended doing it now. I agreed and then went to Starbucks to get a nice cold drink to help my anxiety.
I called at 3:30 and they said he was in surgery. I called again at 5:15 and they told me he was ready to go home! When we got there the ladies at the front counter were acting slightly odd. Just the way they were saying things made Eldest and I wonder if something had gone wrong. They put us in a room and Dr. B came in right away and told us the kitten was fine. But, as she described the surgery she explained that everything went well until the very end when his heart stopped! Oh my! We gasped, but she reassured us they were able to revive him, he had eaten and all was well. But that explains why everyone was acting a bit funny. They were probably all still recovering from the trauma.
This is a photo of the x-ray showing the pin and screw that are now holding the little guy’s leg together.
The poor guy has a shaved hip and leg and about an inch and a half of stitches. But he is limping on that leg, amazingly enough. He is still just as curious as ever, purring away, and adorable. So lets see, so far in his approximately five weeks of life he has lost his mom, had a terribly broken leg, almost starved, endured hot weather with little or no water, had surgery, and had his heart stop and was revived. I don’t think he has many of those nine lived left!
Here he is with his shaved hip and leg. Sorry about the equality of the photo. The good camera died and this was taken with a phone. I didn’t want to subject him to a flash as he was still groggy from surgery. In this photo he kind of looks like he has furry little black boots on!
Meanwhile, his brother is putting on weight like there is no tomorrow and weighs at least a pound more than he does. For now we are to keep them separated unless we are right there to prevent any wrestling or other kitten like activities that might hurt the little black guy’s leg.
OMG! The poor little guy! I’m sending huge (but gentle) hugs his way. No animal deserves a start like that. Of course you will never be able to give him up now.
It appears that might be the case….
It seems as if his name should be “Lucky.” He’s lucky to have survived all the obstacles he’s encountered in his short life so far, and he’s lucky that you found him.
With such strong determination to live through adversity, I am sure this little guy has at least 18 lives!
