Oh Coachella
Woman in the Middle | April 11, 2015Less than two hours from my home, in my very own county, the famous, or infamous, Coachella music festival is going on this weekend. Before that event, the name “Coachella” referred to a valley in the desert region of Riverside County that was famous for being the location of such ritzy cities as Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, as well as many very expensive golf courses. There was also the city of Coachella that, unfortunately for it, didn’t have the wealthy inhabitants and fancy golf courses that some of its neighbors had (and have).
And then there came Coachella. I have no idea how much folks outside of So Cal hear about Coachella. We just got this week’s copy of Rolling Stone and it mentions the event on its cover. But our local news and newspapers are full, and I mean FULL, of coverage of the event for weeks before. Now that Coachella is here, this very weekend, the coverage has reached a fever pitch.
I love music and have been to many concerts over the years, but Coachella has never appealed to me. The desert, even in April, can get very warm, even hot, during the day. But because it is still spring, it turns quite cool at night. You aren’t allowed to bring much into the event and over the years I have seem way too many photos of sweet young celebrities siting on the ground at Coachella for it to ever appeal to ancient me. I need to be allowed to bring in my folding camp chair and a cooler.
Happily, the Coachella coverage only has a few more weeks to go before we get a break of a month or two. Because, in addition to the pre coverage and the coverage during the event, we will have to deal with the post coverage that talks about what did happen at Coachella. Then, after a short break, the breathless coverage of what might happen and who might appear at the next Coachella will begin.
Oh Boy! Oh Coachella!
I have not heard of Coachella till now
Consider yourself lucky! I am so tired of hearing about it!
Who is playing there?
The only one I know for sure is AC/DC.
I never heard of Coachella, but sounds like it’s a popular event. I love your description though and now sure I don’t want to go either!
