Almost waited too late!
Woman in the Middle | December 14, 2014There is no rest for the wicked, or for people who are cleaning out a loved one’s house. Yesterday morning Hubby and I shoveled three large trash can’s full of this and that from Mom in law’s house. Seriously, how long have we been working on this????
But, that is not the point of this story. The point is, we decided to do a table top size tree this year. The table it will be sitting on needed to be moved from Mom-in-law’s house. Besides all the shoveling, that was the most important thing we needed to do this weekend, Well, that and get the tree to put on the table. Well, that and get the giant load of Christmas paper out of her basement and donate it to a local nonprofit that wraps somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 presents for kids every year.
Anyway, as the day wore on, we delivered the Christmas paper and were on the way to get the table, when it occurred to us that having a table but no tree to put on it was a bad thing. Instantly, getting the tree became the next priority. Good thing, as it seems we were waiting until the last-minute to get a fresh-cut tree. Who knew?
My city seems to be a Christmas tree lot free zone this year. The one we knew of was out of small trees. We then went to our local Lowe’s. They had closed down their tree lot and were cleaning up. Oh no! Hubby went around the side of the store to make a U-turn in the parking lot when I noted there were dozens of trees propped up along the side of the building. What? We parked and walked over to where the trees were. A young man was sweeping up. I asked if we could still buy a tree. Oh sure, and they were 50 per cent off, he said. Well, what the heck! We found one that wasn’t too dried out and went to buy it. It was originally $24.99. They gave it to us for $12.00, not $12.50. Then we had to wait for a manager’s approval for the discount, so the checker took another $2.00 off for the inconvenience. So our tree only cost $10.00! Maybe waiting until the last-minute wasn’t so bad after all!
Eldest Daughter has been wanting to do a Star Trek themed tree for years now, breaking out her father’s impressive collection of Star Trek ornaments (thanks to Hallmark and his mom). So, since the tree is small this year, and is the right size to accommodate the number of ornaments we have, I said go for it. We shall see how it turns out. I bought a large, spacey looking ornament last night to use as a tree topper and have some silver bead garland to add to the tree. Gosh, if you didn’t already know my family is a bunch of nerds, I guess you do now!!!
Gee, I didn’t think this was too late for tree shopping?
We didn’t think so either. Thus our surprise and mild panic….
What fun to buy a tree at the last minute (well, at the last minute they are on sale anyway) and your plans for decorating are great! I hope you post a picture….
Since we don’t have a live tree but one that comes out of a box I don’t have to worry about getting one I usually put the tree up the last week in November
