An Anniversay Story
Woman in the Middle | November 4, 2014In the fall of 1977 I was skinny, had a mouth full of braces, hair that was deeply influenced by Farrah Fawcet, and, for some unknown reason, a knowledge that I was going to go to college. Given that last thing, I had enrolled myself in chemistry class for my junior year. Somehow, I knew that advanced science was needed to get into college. I walked in that first day and discovered two things:
1. Mr. Frye, the chemistry teacher, was young, cute, and seemed nice enough.
2. Mr. Frye’s teaching assistant was a senior who had the most adorable baby face and wildly fluffy hair (it was the 70s, remember?) and he set my heart to pitter pattering.
And so the two main themes of my junior year in high school were set. Passing chemistry and getting the attention of that adorable boy in any way my love sick soul could. Passing chemistry was a challenge since being in that room with the person who set all my nerves a zinging made it hard to concentrate on the periodic table. I am happy to report that I did pass chemistry that year. I enjoyed being in Mr.. Frye’s class and I loved seeing that adorable boy every day.
Unfortunately, that boy ended up with another girlfriend. So my puppy love was unrequited. Over the next few years I got to watch the boy take his girlfriend to prom, grow a mustache, and get even cuter.
I went to college at the school nearest to me and lived at home. My freshman year I got a Christmas job at a near by mall. My very first job was at J.C. Penney’s. Guess who worked there? That cute boy’s girlfriend, the one he started dating in high school. Sigh. Life can be cruel, can’t it? It was especially cruel when she made annoying comments about her boyfriend, dissing him to my face. Double sigh.
But, all was not lost. I got a boyfriend myself, then another. My senior year I moved into a campus apartment. As the school year started I received a note in the mail from my junior year puppy love asking how I was doing. I replied, telling him to stop by some time and complaining about my statistics class. He did stop by my apartment, November 2nd, 1982, 32 years ago. I can still see him when I opened the door, holding a book to help me with statistics. I let him in and never let him go again.
Happy dating anniversary, Sweetie! (two days late!)
