Dates, the Edible Kind
Woman in the Middle | July 1, 2014I know, I know, I make this place I live sound so magical – an hour from Disneyland, no snow, low humidity, Starbucks everywhere….but there is something I bet you never dreamed: I live just down the road from the Date Capital of America, if not the world!!! How can it get any better? Yep, I will be telling myself that when it is 110 degrees this August!! That will be my mantra: “No snow and all the dates I can eat.”
I was in Costco last Thursday. (By the way, if you are having a back problem, do not, I repeat, DO NOT go to Costco alone. You will end up at the doctor’s office. Believe me, I know….) Anyway, I was at Costco and they had a display of dates, including a nice big tub of Deglet Noor dates, from a local company called Hadley’s. I decided what the heck, I hadn’t had any dates in a while and I do like them…
Hubby came home and saw the big tub and asked, “What is with the huge tub of dates?” Now, he knew I had gone to Costco, so it was a silly question….Everything from Costco is huge. Ever since, we have been munching on dates.
I picked up the paper a couple of days ago and, there on the front page, was an article entitled, “Date sales surge during Ramadan.” Ramadan started the 28th and it is tradition to break the Ramadan fast with dates. Needless to say, that is a boon to the date growers in the desert areas of California. It also explains why there were dates at Costco. I may not be Muslim, but I am enjoying those dates!
I like dates; they taste like caramel, but they are healthier.
I have never like dates and yes I have tried them
