Good-Bye Dan Bernstein
Woman in the Middle | June 10, 2014Our local daily newspaper is having problems, just like all the other dailies in America. I am old enough to have grown up and lived a significant part of my life when the only source of news, especially local news, was the newspaper. I still love finding that paper in my driveway every morning. It is like I get a present delivered every day of the week, 365 days a year.
One of the things to look forward to was a columnist by the name of Dan Bernstein. His columns ranged from political, (local, state, or national), to warm and fuzzy pieces about wonderful local people making good, to stories about his Old English Sheepdogs (he has had five since he began writing about them). Then there were his infamous April Fool’s Day columns. If you didn’t read all the way to the bottom you were bound to be fooled, he was so good.
My favorite, I admit, was when he skewered local politicians when they did something really silly or stupid. He was just so good at it! I always thought, if I could write a column for a paper, I would love to be just like Dan.
Well, Dan is turning 65 this month and his last column was this past Sunday, after 38 years with the same newspaper. That means I have been reading Dan Bernstein since I was 14 years old. He became a columnist in 1992, so I have been enjoying his columns for 22 years. I feel like I have lost an old friend.
In spite of his ability to hang politicians by their own petard, Dan is a nice guy. I actually do now write a column for the local paper, but it is a history column. He and his wife really liked my last one and sent me an email telling me so. Thanks, Dan, for that, and for 38 years of reading pleasure.
An open house was held for us loyal readers to say good-bye. I made Hubby take a photo of Dan and me. Don’t mind the hair (mine, not his). It had a mind of its own that day.
