Just a Place on the Way to Vegas
Woman in the Middle | April 30, 2014Las Vegas is about three and a half hours from my house. Between here and there is a whole lot of desert so you have to try to beat the boredom anyway you can on that long drive. One of the places that always catches our attention is a road, literally in the middle of nowhere, called “Zzyzx.” We have always pronounced it (and heard it pronounced) ”ziz-iks.”
A couple of days ago I ran across a mention of the “most bizarre name of the last fifteen years.” eBabyNames poured through Social Security records for actual names people gave their babies. They picked the 20 weirdest ones and had people vote on which one was the most bizarre. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the name voted most bizarre was that strange street name we always see on the way to Las Vegas good old Zzyzx. Apparently five, yes five, little babies have been given that name, by apparently drugged addled parents who occasionally go to Las Vegas.
ZZyzx mange to beat out other ridiculous names such as Moo, Zamzam, and Nimrod. You know, in Germany there is a law that you can’t name your kid something weird. We just might need a similar law here! The link to the website that held the name survey is below.
I agree. Sometimes I can’t believe the names or even the spelling. Being a little different is ok but saddling a poor kid with something unpronounceable or laughable is mean.
When I heard about someone naming their child Zzyzx I thought what the hell talk about a stupid name, I don’t get what some people are thinking of when they name their child
My granddaughter wanted to name her dog ZaZu. That’s bad enough!
One of my former principals told me about a mother who named her son, Lemonjello, pronounced Lem ON jel O. She also told me of a mother who named her son, Shithead, pronounced shi TADE.
