Kitchen Attention
Woman in the Middle | October 17, 2012
There has been several things we have been wanting to get done around the house, ever since we purchased it 2 1/2 years ago. Gutting the kitchen and replacing everything in it doesn’t seem to be in the budget right now, if ever. But we decided we could take out the old dirty (and in some places missing) grout between the tiles on the kitchen counters. Friday night Hubby came home with new tools ready to replace grout! What is a girl to say to such an offer but yes?
Friday night and Saturday were devoted to grout removal. Easier said than done because our tiles were placed very close together. But, between muscle power and electrical power it was getting done. One of my jobs was to come along after hubby with the shop vac and vacuum up all the grout dust. For the third time I was happily vacuuming away with my head stuck up under the top cabinets, trying to get to the very back corner when I heard hubby trying to get my attention. I turned around and realized that my kitchen and den were engulfed in a white cloud! The shop vac was picking up the white dust and spitting it out the other end!
I frantically turned off the shop vac and then opened the back sliding door. That did no good whatsoever. I stood there wondering if we were going to come down with a case of white lung when Hubby suggested that I turn on the whole house fan. The man is brilliant! That did the job and in just a minute or two the great hovering cloud was gone. Plenty of white dust will still settled on EVERYTHING in the house but at least we (hopefully) won’t die of grout lung now. The girls weren’t home but the dog and cat were right there with us in the cloud. Here is hoping that neither one of them becomes the canary in the coal mine!
To go with the lovely new grout I pulled out my trusty bottle of Old English Scratch Cover for Light Woods and rubbed all the cabinets down. That stuff is amazing and really helped my old worn out wood cabinets look better. I have covered every kitchen cabinet twice now and haven’t even used up half a bottle. Amazing! One bottle of Old English is much cheaper than all new cabints as well. By the way, the Old English company didn’t ask me to say that. I just like the product!
The grout and cabinet work had made me clean out and clean up as well. So I don’t have a new kitchen, but I sure do have one that looks better! Yeah! Now if I can just get rid of the blue and white floor tiles….
The thought of that white cloud of dust has made me sneeze, sure hope there are no dead pets on the horizion at least the kitchen is looking better………..
I am happy to report that both pets seem to be fine. When I saw that white cloud I didn’t know what to so…scoop up the animals and run or somehow clear the cloud. The whole house fan got it cleared out so fast I didn’t need to grab and run! Hubby was on his own, I am afraid!
My dad installed a whole house fan in our former mountain home. You’re right! It does clean the air out quickly.
