A Book Signing at Costco
Woman in the Middle | October 15, 2012My new local history book is out and my publisher arranged for me to do a book signing at a local Costco. I had two hours to make the following observations. Most will probably not shock you, if you are familier with Costco….
No one dresses up to go to Costco. Maybe one in a hundred seemed to have taken time with their apperance. Big Box Store does not equal putting on makeup.
People love samples! Across from me were the pumpkin spice bread and the mocha cappacino drink. Those were popular!
Bottled water is still very very popular. I was a little shocked at how many people were buying bottled water!
Few people shop at Costco alone. I was beginning to think that there was a sign at the door that forbid people from coming in alone.
Natural light make up mirrors were popular. Several people walked by with one or more in their carts
Children are often bribed with pizza. Give them a slice, throw then in the cart, and go shopping!
Coming after soccer games is common. I saw so many little boys in soccer gear and grass stains.
I thought I was really catching the eye of children until I realized I was sitting next to the display of Cinderella movies. They were pointing at that, not me!
FYI – Keeping it together while talking to the woman whose zipper is way open and way visible can be a challenge… I just wasn’t sure how to say “Your zipper is open perfect stranger.” I know, I know, I was a failure on that one!
I don’t understand why people still buy bottled water either! It seems so much more economical (not to mention environmentally friendly) to just get a Brita filter.
I know!!!
Great Post – ha! – Costco is a unique animal for sure! Happy Monday:)
Costco is opening in Australia but not my part of Australia in one of the capital cities just thought I would throw that in there………….next Ilike freeibes ok not that important either lets try I would bribe my girls when we went shopping like any good mummy should I would tell them to eat their chocolate and be good and when we leave I might buy them an ice cream then I would hope they would be good and forget about the ice cream……………..lol I buy bottled water sometimes but hell I don’t drink as much water as I should yes I am slack…..
Did anyone take the time to listen to you?
Yes. While I did have moments that I had to sit there with a big smile on my face and try to catch someone’s eye, I did sell and sign nine books. I talked with a few more people than that, though. They just didn’t happen to buy books.
I’m thinking the soccer moms bring their little players in after the game because they are tired, but then I think that would make them more whiny. Hence, the pizza! thanks for visiting my blog today. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I hope you visit often. I know I will be back to yours!
I just went to Costco today! Speaking of the samples, it is hard to go there without trying at least one. I managed to do that today because I was just picking up the roasted chicken for $5.00.
Congrats on your book! Costco, huh? Is your book humungous?
You would think, if they are selling it at Costco! No, it is published by History Press and is about 125 pages. People ask me all the time “How do I get published?” My answer is “Write local history!”
