Those Little Must Haves
Woman in the Middle | August 8, 2012Maybe you grew up in a mansion where servants brought you anything you wanted and your life lacked for nothing. I didn’t. We were pretty typically middle class although it fluctuated from lower to upper depending on the economy. My parents were very sociable people (I call my mother “Nell the Party Thrower”) and since I was a late in life child by 1960s standards (mom was 34 when she had me and that was really old back then) I went everywhere with them. I got to see how other people lived and many of them had more money than we did. In many of their bathrooms was a dispenser with the little paper Dixie cups. We never had those ! They were the height of extravagance and luxury to me – a little paper cup that you could use once and throw away! That seemed so much better than the toothpaste and hard water encrusted cup I used when I brushed my teeth! Fast forward and for many years now my house has been supplied with a little Dixie cup holder in each bathroom. I love my little Dixie cups!
I am curious, what little thing did you never have as a child that you make sure to have now? Is it canned apricots? Name brand paper towels?
Butter and mayonnaise!!! I thought margarine/oleo was butter – boy, was I wrong and I’ve never looked back…. Same with mayo. My dad only likes salad dressing – yuck, double yuck. Love me some mayo.
I make sure I have Diet Pepsi on hand. My mom always bought the generic soda.
Chicken breast, we always had chicken wings and to this day I can’t look at them.
Isn’t it funny what we decided we can’t stand or must have based on our childhood? My brothr is always calling me for recipes that our Mom used to make. His favorites are the ones I couldn’t stand!
Oh I found you on SITS and thought I would stop by and visit

I found you on SITS, your blog is so cute! Haha I’ve searched my brain & all I can come up with are peaches. Lol my mom, dad, or my brother didn’t like them, but I LOOVE them.
For my husband it was canned apricots. He never had those! Thanks for stopping by!
