Book Drunk
Woman in the Middle | August 3, 2012Gosh, I haven’t been this book drunk in a long time! You know what I mean. You find a book you really really like and you have a hard time putting it down. You take it with you everywhere and then you stay up too late reading. By the next day you feel blah, a bit like you have a hangover, except you have a book hangover. I don’t want to feel like this every day but once in a while, it feels so good, so good to enjoy a book so much I can’t put it down.
I don’t read a lot of fiction. But yesterday I was at the library and checked out the Library Friends corner and found a paperback I decided looked interesting, even though it was fiction. It was called “Family Tree” by Barbara Delinsky, to give credit where credit is due. It was only a dollar so I was willing to give it a chance. Hope this is all making sense. Remember, I was book drunk and now I have a book hangover!
A funny side note. I was at the doctor’s office this morning. While I was waiting I was finishing up my book. As you might have guessed since I bought it at the Friend’s corner, it was a real book. Across the way from me was an older couple. They both looked to be well in to their 70′s. They were each reading, too, but they were reading on some type of device, a Kindle or a Nook or such. I still read the old fashioned way. Aren’t people who are older than me supposed to be less into technology than I am, a young 50 year old?
Have you read a good book recently? Tell me the title!
Unlike you, I read a lot of fiction. Mostly mysteries & SF/fantasy, but recently I read The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. I’d heard of her, but never read any of her books, This is historical fiction about 4 women who end up at Massada in 73 CE. The book is in 4 sections, each telling the story of one of the women & how they came to be at Massada. Fascinating.
I will have to check that out! I may not read a lot of fiction, but when I do read it, it is usually historical fiction.
I LOVE the term book drunk. That’s the perfect description for it.
It came to me this morning as I was driving home from the doctor’s office feeling slightly nauseous from having had my nose stuck in a book for too long. I thought it described the feeling I was having pretty well. I am glad you like it!
I recently finished a nonfiction book entitled, “Girl, Interrupted”. It’s a collection of memories of an 18-year-old girl during her stay in a mental institution. It was made into a movie starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.
That sounds interesting. I remember the movie (although I didn’t see it) but I have never read the book.
I know exactly what you mean! Love it occasionally!

I’ve never heard the term “book drunk” before…but it’s perfect. Why is it we stay up until 4 in the morning reading and then are barely able to function the next day? Why do we do it?
Oh my…I’m amazed at the number of ‘older’ folks who are ‘wired’ – pretty cool!!!
Over from the SITS Girls! Happy Weekend!
I made the term “Book Drunk” up Friday as I dealt with the ramifications of staying up past 1 am to read. I thought it fit! I am also amazed by the number of older people who are wired! A friend just moved his dad into assisted living. I asked how he was doing. My friend told me his dad was fine as long as he had his TV, his computer, and his Kindle!I couldn’t believe it!
I’m rereading What Is the What right now. It’s the story of one of the “lost boys” of Sudan. It is a wonderful, riveting book (haha, obviously, since I’m reading it for the second time!) I highly recommend it if you haven’t read it!
That sounds very good! I find the story of the lost boys fascinating!
